Weak volume growth, flat-lining reimbursement, and the financial uncertainties of health care reform have made supply cost reduction an ongoing priority for hospitals and health systems. With preference items composing an increasing percentage of supply spend, the lion’s share of effort has been spent here, hardwiring physician involvement in value analysis committees and leveraging the business intelligence technology necessary to monitor adherence to committee decisions. On the commodity front, providers are reevaluating GPO contracts to determine the optimal mix between national GPOs, regional purchasing coalitions and self-contracting. For those moving toward more independent operations, proper IT deployment is critical, and executives are ensuring existing technology is used appropriately.

To help our members assess the pace and degree of advancement of these trends across the industry, Advisory Board researchers surveyed hospital supply chain executives across the past year to gauge the degree of physician involvement, IT utilization and staffing structure in supply chain operations. This webconference presents an analysis of our results and highlights areas of future research within the firm’s supply chain practice.
